빅토리아수련(아마존빅토리아수련과 파라과이빅토리아수련)

두 종 모두 빅토리아 수련이나 우리나라에서는 보통 Victoria amazonica만 ‘빅토리아수련’으로 부르고 Victoria cruziana는 ‘파라과이수련’으로 부른다. (또는 빅토리아연꽃, 파라과이연꽃이라고도 함)

2. 파라괴이수련: Victoria cruziana A. D. Orb.- 국표식 : 파라과이빅토리아수련

남아메리카(브라질, 콜롬비아, 가이아나, 페루)에 자생한다. 부엽(浮葉)이 대형으로 최대 직경이 2.78 m에 도달한 예도 보고되어 있다. 아이가 올라 탄 모습을 보여주는 사진도 있다고 한다.  잎이 최초로 수면에 뜰 때는 잎의 색깔이 짙은 밤색(maroon/bronze)이다가 자라면서 녹색/구리색으로 변하고 어린 개체에서는 잎의 테두리가 가볍게 위로 젖혀지나 자라면서 테두리의 높이가 낮아진다. 꽃봉오리의 짙은 밤색 꽃받침은 가시로 덮여 있다. 꽃은 개화 첫날밤에는 흰색이나 두 번째날 밤(꽃은 2일간만 개화)에는 식물과 기후 조건에 따라 다양한 색(분홍색, 밤색, 검붉은색)이 나온다.

2. 파라과이 수련 (국표식: 파라과이빅토리아수련)

 

남아메리카(아르헨티나, 파라과이)에서 자생한다. 부엽 크기는  최대 지름 2m이다. 부엽의  젖혀진 면 높이는 아마존빅토리아수련보다 높아 최대 20cm에 이르고 바깥 면은 때로는 붉은색이 섞인 녹색이다.  꽃봉오리는 뾰족한 형태이고 연분홍색의 꽃받침에는 가시가 없다. 꽃은 개화 첫날밤에는 우유 빛 흰색(creamy white)이다가 두 번째 날 밤(꽃은 2일간만 개화)에는 연분홍색이 된다. 

 

( 파라과이빅토리아 수련은 꽃봉오리의 꽃받침에 가시가 없다고 하나 꽃받침 기부에는 일부 가시 털이 있다

그러나 아마존빅토리아수련은 꽃받침 전체에 가시가 밀생한다 )

Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J. C. Sowerby

Native to South America (Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and Perú), V. amazonica is characterized by pads that are maroon/bronze when they first reach the water's surface to bronze/green as they age, with rims just slightly upturned in young plants and low rims in mature adults. Buds are squat with numerous thorns on the dark maroon sepals. Flowers are white the first night with rounded petals. They are variable the second night, both plant to plant and depending on weather conditions, from medium pink to dark red and maroon.

Native to South America (Argentina and Paraguay), V. cruziana is characterized by bright green pads with tall rims, the exteriors of which are green sometimes suffused with red. Buds are somewhat pointed with no thorns on the medium pink sepals. The flowers are creamy white the first night with pointed petals becoming light pink the second night.
