Herbs, perennial, evergreen, densely cespitose. Rhizomes short, erect. Culms lateral, 20-40cm tall, slightly shorter than leaves,trigonous, smooth. Basal sheaths bladeless, dark brown, dull, fibrilose.. Leaves basal; blade flat, 6-15mm wide, stiff, margins scabrous to serrulate.. Flowers March to May. Inflorescence racemose, with 4-6 spikes on upper 1/2 to 2/3 of culm, spikes 1 per node, remote; terminal spike staminate, linear, 2-5cm long, 3-4mm wide, reddish brown; lateral spikes pistillate, pedunculate, erect to ascending, cylindrical, 1.5-3.5 cm long, ca. 6 mm wide, densely many flowered. Bracts setaceous, with long sheath, sheaths rather loose. Pistillate scales lanceolate to ovate, ca. as long as perigynia, acute to shortly aristate, apically brownish. Perigynia patent at maturity, ovoid, trigonous, 3-3.5 mm long, 1.2-1.3 mm wide, menbranaceous, finely veined, glabrous, yellowish green, base cuneate, rather long beaked, beak curved at maturity . margins more or less scabrous , apex bidentate. Achenes rather tightly enveloped by perigynium, ellipsoid, trigonous, ca 2 mm long, style base slightly annulate, Stigmas 3
