전국 산지에 분포한다.
형태
여러해살이풀이다.
생육환경
산지의 숲 속에서 자란다.
크기
높이 15-30cm이다.
잎
잎은 마주나기하고 길이 2-4cm, 폭 1.5-2.5cm로서 삼각상 넓은 달걀모양이며 질이 얇고 끝이 둔하며 밑부분이 다소 심장저이고 가장자리에 톱니가 있으며 양면에 털이 있고 엽병은 길이 1~2cm이다.
꽃
꽃은 5~6월에 피며 연한 자주색이고 총상꽃차례는 줄기 윗부분에 있는 잎모양의 포 가장자리에 1개씩 달려 모두 한쪽 방향을 향하며 꽃차례는 길이 3-6cm로서 퍼진 샘털이 있거나 털이 없고 꽃자루에 털이 있다. 꽃받침은 꽃이 필 때는 길이 2-2.5mm이지만 열매가 익을 때는 길이 5mm로서 상순에 부속편이 있다. 꽃부리는 밑부분이 굽어 위를 향하며 길이 15~20mm로서 끝이 양순형(兩脣形)으로 갈라지고 상순은 하순 길이의 1/2정도이며 하순은 3개로 갈라지고 모두 끝이 둔하다. 수술 4개 중 2개는 길고, 암술머리는 2개로 갈라진다.
열매
분과는 길이 0.7mm로서 돌기가 있다.
줄기
높이 15-30cm이고 원줄기에 위로 굽은 백색 털이 다소 밀생하며 네모가 진다.
뿌리
백색 땅속줄기가 옆으로 길게 뻗는다.
유사종
▶호골무꽃 (var.ussuriensis HAND.-MAZZ.): 마디에 털이 많고 다은 부분에 털이 적다.
▶기본종은 샘털이 없다.
