잎
잎은 어긋나기하거나 간혹 마주나기하며 타원형 도는 긴 타원형이고 길이 1-4cm, 폭 5-18mm로서 예두 또는 둔두이며 원저 또는 넓은 예저이고 가장자리가 거의 밋밋하며 표면은 녹색으로서 털이 없고 뒷면은 흰빛이 돌며 털이 있으나 점차 없어진다. 엽병은 길이 2mm정도로서 털이 있을 때와 없을 때가 있다.
꽃
꽃은 새가지 끝에 꼬리모양꽃차례로 달리고 웅화수는 길이 7-10mm이며 포는 도란상 긴 타원형으로서 둔두이고 털이 있으며 꿀샘은 1개, 수술은 2개이다. 자화수는 길이 1-2cm이고 포는 거꿀달걀모양이며 털이 거의 없고 꿀샘은 1개이다. 씨방은 원통상 달걀모양으로서 털이 없으며 대가 있고 대는 꿀샘 길이의 2배 정도이며 암술대는 짧고 암술머리는 4개이다.
열매
열매는 삭과로서 길이 4mm정도이다.

일년생가지와 동아에 털이 있다.
특징
어린 잎의 뒷면에 백색 또는 갈색 견모가 있는 특성을 들어서 변종으로 취급하기도 한다.

Stipules lanceolate or ovate, small; petiole 2-4 mm; leaf blade elliptic or long elliptic, 1-3.5 × 0.7-1.5 cm, glabrous, abaxially whitish, black when dried, adaxially dull green or slightly purplish, base rounded, rarely broadly cuneate, margin entire, rarely dentate, apex obtuse or rounded. Flowering coetaneous. Male catkin terete, with leaflets at base; bracts green or yellowish green, elliptic, sparsely villous, apex purple. Male flower: adaxial gland ca. 1/2 as long as bracts; stamens 2; filaments glabrous. Female catkin ovoid, with leaflets at base; bracts elliptic, sparsely pubescent. Female flower: gland adaxial; ovary cylindric, glabrous; stipe ca. 1/3 as long as ovary; style short; stigma 2-cleft. Fl. May, fr. Jun. 2n = 38.
