Nemophila menziesii, known commonly as baby blue eyes or baby's-blue-eyes,[1] is an annual herb, native to western North America.[2][3]

 

 

Distribution

The plant is native to California, Baja California, and Oregon.[2]

 

It grows virtually throughout California at elevations from sea level up to almost 6,500 feet (2,000 m). It grows in many types of habitats, including chaparral, valley grasslands, and montane locales.[3][2]

 

Description

Nemophila menziesii is variable in appearance. Lower leaves are stalked, lobed and oppositely arranged, 1050 millimetres (0.42.0 in) with five to thirteen lobes, each entire or with one to three teeth. Upper leaves are more or less sessile and less lobed than lower. The stalk of the inflorescence is 2060 millimetres (0.82.4 in). Calyx lobes are 48 millimetres (0.20.3 in). The flower is blue with a white center or all white, usually with blue veins and black dots near the center. It is 640 millimetres (0.21.6 in) wide. The tube is less than or equal to the filaments.

What is baby blue eyes

Baby blue eyes (Scientific name: Nemophila menziesii subsp. Insignis) is a cold-weed crawling annual grass of the genus Nemophila of the Boraginaceae family in the western part of North America such as California. In the spring, light blue flower bells with a bell-shaped tip and 5 tears at the tip are blooming in inflorescences stretched from low plant height. The flower is a blue ground and the center is white. The tip of the petal is rounded. If it is a crowd, it looks like a blue carpet on one side. It is similar to the wild grass birdeye speedwell (Scientific name: Veronica persica) which even smaller flowers bloom.
