그동안 미국매화오리나무로 소개되된 것이 국표식에 향매화오리나무로 등재되었다

Clethra alnifolia (Sweet Pepperbush, Anne Bidwell or Summersweet), is a flowering plant in the genus Clethra, native to eastern North America from southern Nova Scotia and Maine south to northern Florida, and west to eastern Texas.

 

매화오리나무속(Clethra)의 식물로 북미지역이 원산지이다.

It is a deciduous shrub growing to 2-4 m tall. The leaves are obovate to oblong, 4-10 cm long and 2-4 cm broad, with a serrated margin; they are green turning yellow-golden during the autumn. The flowers are white or very pale pink, 5-10 mm diameter, and have a sweet, somewhat cloying fragrance, the flowers attractive to bumblebees; they are produced in racemes up to 15 cm long and 2 cm broad from July until September. The "Pepper" part of the name derives from the mature fruits, capsules which have a vague resemblance to peppercorns, however, with no element of spiciness.

2-4m 크기로  자라는 낙엽성 관목이다 잎은 도란형 내지 장타원형으로 길이 4-10 cm, 폭  cm이며 예거치이다. 가을에는 노란색으로 물든다. 꽃은 길이 15 cm 폭 2 cm 정도의 총상화서로 달리며 흰색 또는 매우 연한 분홍색으로  꽃의 지름은 5-10 mm이다. 때로는 좀 물릴 수 있는 달콤한 향기가 있으며 7-9월 사이에 핀다 . 영명의   Pepper-는 열매 모양이 후추를 닮은 데에서 연유한 것으로 맛과는 관계가 없다. 이 식물은 습기가 있는 숲이나 소택지, 습지 등에서 자란다.
