우리나라에서는 보통 ‘아주가(Ajuga)로 부르는 것이다. 그러나 Ajuga는 속명으로 전세계에 40-50 종이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다 . 우리나라에는 Ajuga속으로 금창초 Ajuga decumbens Thunb. 내장금란초 Ajuga decumbens var. rosa Y.N.Lee, 붉은조개나물 Ajuga multiflora for. rosea Y.N.Lee, 자란초 Ajuga spectabilis Nakai, 조개나물 Ajuga multiflora Bunge, 흰조개나물 Ajuga multiflora for. leucantha (Nakai) T.B.Lee 의 6종이 <국생정>에 등재되어 있다. 아래에 올린 것은 가장 흔한 Ajuga reptans L.로 보인다. 조개나물이나 금창초와 다른 점은 이 ’아주가‘는 털이 없다는 점이다.

This plant is often used as an ornamental plant. It is invasive in parts of North America. The bugle has dark green leaves with purple highlights. It is a spreading ground cover that grows in a dense mat. The leaves grow 5–8 cm (2–3 in) high but in the spring it sends up 10–15 cm (4–6 in) tall flower stalks with many purple flowers on them.

Bugle is also known as "carpenter's herb" due to its supposed ability to stem bleeding.
