Desmodium paniculatum (L.) DC.
Bean family (Fabaceae)
Description: This perennial wildflower is 2–3½' tall, sometimes branching in the upper half. The stems are light green and usually hairless; however, some variants of this species have pubescent stems. Alternate compound leaves occur at intervals along the stems; they are trifoliate and their leaflets are extended horizontally in relation to the ground. Individual leaflets are up to 3½" long and ¾" across; they are 3-6 times as long as they are wide. Some variants of this species have more narrow leaflets than others. The terminal leaflet is the same length or a little longer than the lateral leaflets. The leaflets are elliptic to oblong in shape and smooth along their margins. Their upper surfaces are medium green and glabrous, while their lower surfaces are pale to medium green and covered with appressed white hairs. The petioles of the compound leaves are up to 2" long, light green, and mostly hairless. At the base of each petiole, there is a pair of tiny deciduous stipules that are linear-lanceolate; these stipules soon wither away. The petiolules (secondary petioles) of the lateral leaflets are very short (less than 1/8" or 3 mm.), while the petiolules of the terminal leaflets are longer (up to ½").
The upper stems terminate in either racemes or narrow panicles of flowers. The branches of each inflorescence are light green and covered with hooked hairs. Individual flowers are ¼" long (or a little more), consisting of 5 petals, a short tubular calyx with teeth, an ovary with a single style, and several hidden stamens. The flowers have a typical pea-like structure, consisting of an upright banner and 2 lateral wings that enclose a central keel. The petals are pink to rosy pink; at the base of the upper petal (banner), there are 1-2 tiny patches of yellow. The green calyx is covered with hooked hairs. The slender petioles of the flowers are about ½" long; they are green to reddish purple and also covered with hooked hairs. The blooming period occurs from mid-summer to early fall and lasts about 1–1½ months. There is no noticeable floral scent. Fertile flowers are replaced by flat loments (a type of seedpod) that are about ½–1½" long. Each loment consists of 2-6 rounded segments, a short stipe, and sometimes a short beak. Each segment of a loment is more rounded along the bottom than along the top; it contains a single seed. The loments are covered with hooked hairs. The root system consists of an elongated caudex with fibrous roots. This wildflower spreads by reseeding itself.
Cultivation: The preference is partial sun, mesic to dry-mesic conditions, and sandy or rocky soil.

캐나다된장풀
Desmodium canadense (L.) DC.
Flower
1 or more spike-like racemes, usually densely packed, of stalked flowers at the top of the stem and arising from upper leaf axils. Flowers are pea-shaped, about ½ inch long, pink to purple with 2 yellow spots near the base of the broad upper lobe. The stamens and pistil form a curving tube that protrudes from the center, between the 2 lateral petals. The calyx behind the flower and the short flower stalk are reddish green and hairy.
Leaves and stem:
Leaves are compound in 3s, alternately attached. Leaflets are hairy, more densely hairy along major veins on the underside, to 3 inches long and 1 inch wide with a rounded or slightly tapering base and blunt point at the tip. The 2 lateral leaflets are short-stalked to nearly stalkless, the end leaflet longer stalked. Stalks are hairy. The compound leaf stalk is up to about ¾ inch long, usually shorter than the stalk of the terminal leaflet, though the lowest leaves may be longer stalked.
At the base of the leaf stalk is a pair of leafy appendages (stipules) that are linear to narrowly awl-shaped and up to about 1/3 inch long. Stems are unbranched except in the flower clusters, ridged, rough with spreading hairs, and erect to ascending or sometimes sprawling. Some hairs may have tiny hooks at the tip (magnification required to see) but most are straight.
Fruit:
Fruit is a flat pod 1 to 2½ inches long with 3 to 5 sections, the sections convex on the upper edge and well rounded on the lower, and each containing a single seed.
Seeds are kidney-shaped, about 4 mm long, and mature to brown. The pod is densely covered in tiny hooked hairs that latch onto anything that passes by.
Notes:
Showy Tick-trefoil tends to grow in clumps. The leaves and flowers are most similar to the related Illinois Tick-trefoil (Desmodium illinoense) and Large-bract Tick-trefoil (Desmodium cuspidatum), both of which have more loosely arranged flower clusters, compound leaf stalks that are much longer than the terminal leaflet stalk, and larger, more prominent stipules. D. illinoense also typically has a single raceme and its pod segments are well rounded on both edges; D. cuspidatum leaves are more evenly hairy on the lower surface, only slightly more dense on the major veins, and pod segments are more triangular.

Showy Tick Trefoil
Desmodium canadense
Bean family (Fabaceae)
Description: This herbaceous perennial plant is about 3' tall and normally erect, although it sometimes sprawls along the ground. The green central stem has fine white hairs, sometimes turning brown in response to drought. There are usually a few flowering side stems in the upper half of a large mature plant. The compound leaves consist of three leaflets that are greyish green. Each compound leaf has a short petiole with a pair of small deciduous sheaths at its base. The leaflets are 2-3½" long and less than half as wide. They are oblong or lanceolate in overall shape, but rounded at the tips rather than pointed. Their undersides have fine hooked hairs that cling to clothing or the fur of passing animals.
Numerous pink flowers in an elongated panicle occur at the end of one or more of the upper stems. The flowers are about ½" across (as measured vertically), consisting of an upper and a lower petal. These petals are initially folded and keel-like, but eventually open wide, begining with the upper petal. There is a small patch of dark pink at the center of the flower, from which emerges an upwardly curved white tube containing the stigmas and pistil. There is no floral scent. Each flower occurs on a hairy red pedicel, and has a hairy greenish red calyx. The blooming period occurs during mid-summer and lasts about 3 weeks. The flat seedpods have 3 to 5 segments and are about 2½" long. Like the undersides of the leaves, they are covered with fine hooked hairs, and are distributed by passing animals. Usually, the lower side of a seedpod is more rounded than the upper side. Technically, these seedpods are called 'loments.' The root system consists of a taproot that is long, slender, and brown./p>
