일년생이다. 줄기는 높이 7-35cm로서 모여나고, 연약하며, 매끈하다. 잎은 엽초는 옅은 갈색이고, 막질이며, 구부에 긴 털이 있다. 엽신은 실모양이고, 길이 5-13mm이며, 이면에 성기게 털이 있다. 가장자리는 전연이고, 약간 말리며, 끝은 점첨두이다. 포엽은 2-3개로 긴 가시모양 혹은 인편모양이고, 화서보다 길이가 훨씬 짧으며, 끝은 점첨두이다. 화서는 단순 혹은 복합 인상화서이고, 4-7개의 소수가 달리며, 화수자루는 3-5개이다. 소수는 단생하거나 모여나고, 장타원상 난형-난형이다. 5-18개의 소화가 달리는데 아래쪽은 둥글고, 끝은 예두이다. 인편은 갈색이고, 난형-넓은 난형이며, 막질이다. 1-3맥이 있고, 중륵은 용골상으로 녹색이며, 아래쪽은 둥글다. 가장자리에 잔털이 있고, 끝은 둔두이나 드물게 예두도 있다. 불임성 인편은 황록색이고, 끝이 가끔 잔돌기모양이다. 수술은 2개이고, 약은 장타원상 난형-난형이다. 수과는 성숙하면 회색이 도는 자색이고, 도란형이며, 단면은 삼릉형이다. 표면에 희미하게 물결 모양의 주름과 잔점이 있고, 끝은 갑자기 줄어들며, 눌린 구근 모양의 암술대가 붙어 있다. 암술은 암술대는 실모양이고, 주두는 3갈래로 갈라진다.

비고
꽃하늘지기에 비해 화서가 가지를 내지 않고, 인편이 적갈색인 것을 실하늘지기[B. densa var. capitata (Miq.) Ohwi.]라고 하여 변종으로 인정하기도 한다(Hoshino et al., 2011; Cho et al., 2016). 모기골(B. barbata)에 비해 화서가 산방상으로 가지를 치고, 인편이 갈색인 점이 다르다.

Rhizomes absent. Culms tufted, 7-35 cm tall, slender, smooth. Leaf sheath pale, membranous, mouth long pilose; leaf blade filiform, 5-10(-13) × ca. 0.6 mm, papery, abaxially sparsely pilose, margin entire and slightly revolute, apex acuminate. Involucral bracts 2 or 3, setaceous to glumelike, 0.8-1.5 cm, much shorter than inflorescence, apex acuminate. Inflorescence a simple or subcompound anthela, with 4-7 spikelets; rays 3-5, 2-5 cm. Spikelets solitary or clustered, oblong-ovoid to ovoid, 3-6 × ca. 1.5 mm, 5-18-flowered, base rounded, apex acute. Glumes brown, ovate to broadly ovate, 1.5-2 × 1-1.5 mm, membranous, 1-3-veined, base rounded, margin ciliate, apex obtuse to rarely acute; empty glumes yellowish green, apex sometimes mucronate. Stamens 2; anthers oblong-ovoid to ovoid, base cuneate, apex acute. Style filiform; stigmas 3. Nutlet grayish purple at maturity, obovoid, ca. 0.8 × 0.5-0.6 mm, 3-sided, inconspicuously undulate-corrugate(주름이 잡힌) and puncticulate, apex contracted with a persistent depressed bulbous style base. Fl. and fr. Apr-Dec. 2n = 64.
