잎
잎은 호생하며 도란상 타원형 또는 도란상 긴 타원형이고 첨두이며 예저 또는 아심장저이고 길이 3.5-20cm로서 가장자리는 밋밋하며 양면에 털이 없으나 표면에 털이 악간 있는 것도 있고 엽맥이 뚜렷하게 돌출하며 엽병은 길이 1-3cm이다.
열매
열매는 은화과(隱花果)로 9-10월에 흑자색으로 성숙한다. 화낭이 자라서 열매로 되며 자흑색으로 익으면 식용한다.
꽃
꽃은 암수딴그루로서 5-6월에 새가지의 엽액에서 1개의 화경이 자라고 끝에 3개의 포가 있으며 그 위에 둥근 화낭(花囊)이 있다. 주머니 같은 화낭은 지름 15mm내외로서 그안에 많은 꽃이 들어 있으나, 꽃은 화낭에 싸여 볼 수 없다. 수꽃은 5-6개의 화피열편과 3개 정도의 수술이 있고 암꽃은 3-5개의 화피열편과 대가 있는 1개의 자방에 짧은 암술대가 있다.
줄기
높이 2-4m이고 수피는 평활하며 가지는 회백색이고 털이 없다.
새 가지에서 피목(皮目)이 발달하여 무늬처럼 보인다.

Trees or shrubs, 2-7 m tall, deciduous or semideciduous. Bark grayish brown. Branchlets glabrous or densely brown tomentose. Stipules caducous, reddish brown, broadly ovate or triangular-lanceolate, ca. 1 cm, membranous, puberulous. Petiole slender, 1-4 cm, glabrous or pubescent; leaf blade obovate-elliptic, oblong, lanceolate, obovate, or narrowly obovate, 7-25 × 4-10 cm, thickly papery, glabrous or tomentose, base rounded to ± cordate, margin entire or occasionally undulate toward apex, apex shortly acuminate or acute and mucronate; basal lateral veins elongated, secondary veins 5-8(-10) on each side of midvein and apically curved. Figs axillary on normal leafy shoots, solitary, reddish yellow to blackish purple or red when mature, globose to pear-shaped, 1-2.5 cm in diam., glabrous or hairy, apical pore navel-like; peduncle 1-2 cm; involucral bracts ovate-triangular, glabrous or thinly pubescent. Male flowers: many scattered, subsessile to pedicellate; calyx lobes (2 or)3(-6), elliptic to ovate-lanceolate; stamens 2 or 3.
