중국; 평안남북도 ~ 강원특별자치도(함경남북도에는 분포하지 않음)에 분포하지만 백두대간을 따라 지리산까지 분포.
생육환경
▶산중턱 절사면이나 다른 식물들이 잘 자라지 못하는 메마른 땅에 군생한다.

잎
잎은 어긋나기하며 긴 타원형으로, 첨두, 예저이고, 길이와 폭은 각 3 ~ 8cm× 3 ~ 4cm로, 중앙 이하에 단거치 또는 겹톱니가 있으며, 양면에 털이 없고 잎자루는 길이가 5 ~ 10mm이고, 털이 없다.
꽃
꽃은 5~6월경에 피고 새가지 끝에 달리는 겹편평꽃차례며 지름이 7 ~ 8(10)cm이고 꽃 지름은 7 ~ 9mm로, 백색으로 피는데 중앙부는 연한 홍색이다. 꽃받침조각은 뒤로 젖혀지며 꽃잎은 둥글고 지름 3mm이고 수술이 꽃잎보다 2배 길다.
열매
열매는 골돌과로서 지름 3mm, 복봉선에만 털이 있고, 9월에 성숙한다.

번식방법
6~7월에 녹지삽도 잘 되고 9월에 종자를 채취하여 낙엽수 밑이나 수태가 자라고 잡초가 잘 자라지 않는 축축한 장소에 파종하면 다음해 봄에 발아한다. 발아한 어린묘는 적당히 솎아주고 이듬해 봄에 이식하면 당년에 개화한다.
특징
▶우리 나라 특산식물이며 관상가치가 높다.
▶가지 끝에 피어나는 흰 꽃무리가 야성미를 느끼게 하며 꿀샘이 깊어서 벌들이 즐겨 찾는다.
▶맹아력이 강하며 천연하종발아가 잘된다.

Flowers 5–6 mm in diam. Hypanthium campanulate, glabrous abaxially. Sepals triangular, 1.5–2 mm, about as broad as long, reflexed in fruit, apex acute. Petals white, pinkish in bud, ovate, 2–4 × 2–2.5 mm, glabrous, apex obtuse. Stamens 25–30, longer than petals. Disk annular, with 8–10 unequal, emarginate lobes. Carpels pubescent; styles shorter than stamens. Follicles suberect, spreading, glabrous or pubescent only on adaxial suture; styles terminal, erect or slightly divergent. Fl. May–Jun, Fr. Aug–Sep.
