학명: Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott→ 토란 분류: 천남성과(Araceae) 물에서 자란다고해서 물토란으로 이름을 붙인 듯하지만 정식 식물명칭으로 물토란이라는 것은 없다. 따라서 물에서 자라는 토란도 학명은 보통 토란처럼 Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott로 쓴다. 토란에는 워낙 다양한 품종이 있어 위의 물에서 자라는 품종이 이름이 무엇인지는 모르겠다. 인터넷에서 물토란을 검색하면 학명이 Sagittaria trifolia Linne for.longiloba Makino로 나오는 경우도 있는데 이것은 잘못된 것이다. Sagittaria trifolia Linne for.longiloba Makino는 택사과의 ‘가는보풀’이다
