분류: 아욱과 (Malvaceae)

 

* 우리나라에 바오밥나무로 잘못 알려진 나무다. 한택식물원에서도 잘못 소개하고 있다.

위의 나무는 우리말로 어떻게 불러야할지 몰라 영명을 그대로 사용하였다.

바오밥나무와 Queensland Bottle Tree는 모양이 비슷하고 영어권에서는 이칭으로 둘 다 Bottle Tree로 부른다.

(Botttle tree로 부르는  것은 아래에서 보듯이 여러 종류가 있다

 Adansonia species, the baobabs;

Adansonia gregorii, the boab;

Pachypodium lealii, (Apocynaceae), the bottle tree of Namibia and Angola;

The genus Moringa, (Moringaceae), of the Madagascar spiny thickets and elsewhere;

Brachychiton or Kurrajong species, (Malvaceae), of Australia;

Ceiba species, the floss silk tree or palo borracho of South America.

어린왕자에 나오는 바오밥나무는  Adansonia  속의 나무들을 말한다.  차후에 소개할 바오밥나무는 이 Queensland Bottle Tree와는 잎의 형태가 다르다.

오스트레일리아에도  바오밥나무라고 부르는 것이 있는데  위의 있는 것들  중  Adansonia gregorii를 가리킨다.

* Queensland Bottle Tree에 대한 설명:

 

The Queensland Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestris) originally classified in the family Sterculiaceae, which is now within Malvaceae, is native of Queensland, Australia. Its grossly swollen trunk gives it a remarkable appearance and gives rise to the name. As a succulent, drought-deciduous tree, it is tolerant of a range of various soils, and temperatures.

 

It can grow to 18-20 meters (40 feet) in height and its trunk has the unique shape of a bottle. Its swollen trunk is primarily used for water storage. on every tree the leaves are variable from narrow and elliptic to deeply divided. Clusters of yellowy bell shaped flowers are hidden within the foliage, and are followed by woody boat-shaped fruits.

 

Bottle Trees are commonly found planted in streets, parks, on farms and as features in gardens. Roma, Queensland is one country town with prominent bottle trees. They also grace the new entrance to the Geelong Botanic Gardens (38° South Latitude).
