학명: Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai

 *  죽절초는 종전에 Chloranthus속-  종전 학명은 Chloranthus glaber (Thunb.) Makino-이었나  Sarcandra속으로 분리되었다. (아래 인용 자료 참조)

유사종:

황색죽절초(var.flave okuyama)

줄기에 대나무와 같은 마디가 생기며 풀과 같이 부드럽기 때문에 '죽절초'라고 한다. 감소추세에 있어 가까운 시일 안에 멸종위기에 처할 위협을 받고 있다. 

잎은 대생하며 혁질이고 긴 타원형 또는 넓은 피침형이고 길이 5-16cm로서 첨두 원저이며 치아상 톱니가 성글게 있고 양면에 털이 없으며 뒷면이 황록색이고 엽병은 길이 5-20mm로서 털이 없다.

높이가 1m에 달하고 줄기는 녹색이며 털이 없고 넓게 퍼지며 마디가 두드러진다.

꽃은 양성화로서 6-7월에 피며 수상화서에 달리고 황록색이며 포는 끝까지 남아 있고 화피는 없으며 자방은 난형이고 길이 1mm정도로서 털이 없으며 연녹색이다. 수술은 자방 어깨에서 수평으로 퍼지고 황색이며 양쪽에 꽃밥이 있다.

핵과는 구형으로 5-6개 또는 10개가 모여 달리며 길이 5-7mm로서 10-12월에 붉은색으로 성숙하고 핵은 둥글며 굳다.
