잎
잎은 교호로 마주나기하며 거꿀피침모양 또는 넓은 도피임형이며 양끝이 좁고 엽병과 털이 없으나 어릴 때는 원줄기 윗부분 및 꽃차례와 더불어 길고 연한 갈색 면모가 산생하며 점첨둔두 또는 아둔두에 쐐기모양이고 길이 4-10cm, 넓이 15-25mm로서 전체에 흑색 점이 있으며 밑부분의 것은 퇴화되어 비늘처럼 된다. 표면은 털이 없고 뒷면은 담백색에 줄기끝, 꽃차례와 더불어 담갈색의 장면모가 드물게 있다.
꽃
꽃은 6-7월에 피며 황색이고 원줄기 중앙에서 액생한 길이 2-3cm의 총상꽃차례에 밀생한다. 꽃받침조각은 6개이고 꽃부리는 꽃받침보다 1.5배 길며 6개로 깊에 갈라지고 열편은 넓은 선형에 둔두이고 길이 4-5mm이며 윗부분에 흑점이 다소 있고 수술은 6개로서 꽃부리보다 길다.
열매
삭과는 둥글며 지름 2.5mm정도로서 흑점이 있고 길이 4mm정도되는 암술대가 숙존한다.
줄기
높이 30-60cm이고 줄기는 원주형이며 곧추서고 가지가 적게 갈라지거나 없으며 밑잎은 인편상이다.
뿌리
근경이 지하에서 길게 가로 뻗는다.
유사종
좁쌀풀에 비해 잎은 마주나고, 꽃은 잎겨드랑이에서 이삭 모양의 총상꽃차례에 달리며, 암술과 수술은 길게 꽃부리 밖으로 나오므로 구별된다.

Leaves opposite, sessile, rarely indistinctly petiolate; leaf blade lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, 5--15 X 0.6--2 cm, lower part tapering toward obtuse or semi-clasping base, abaxially glabrous except for sparingly villous midvein, sparsely black glandular punctate, adaxially glabrous, apex acute to acuminate. Racemes dense, capitate or spikelike, pedunculate, 1--3 cm, confined in axils of medial and upper leaves; peduncle 1.5--3 cm, glabrous or sparingly villous. Pedicel 1--3 mm, glabrous or sparingly villous. Calyx 2--3.5 mm, parted nearly to base; lobes usually 6 or 7, linear-lanceolate, black glandular punctate. Corolla cream-yellow, parted nearly to base; lobes usually same number as calyx lobes, linear, 5--6 X 0.5--1 mm, black glandular punctate and striate. Stamens ca. as long as to longer than corolla; filaments 4--5 mm, nearly free, adnate to base of corolla; anthers oblong, dorsifixed, ca. 1 mm. Ovary sparingly puberulent; style 4.5--6 mm.
