* <국생정>에서는 속명을 Scirpus로 하고 있다. 그러나 국외에서는 매자기. 좀매자기, 큰매자기는 모두 속명이 Bolboschoenus (Scirpus의 하위 속)로 되어 있다.
학명 풀이:
Bolboschoenus: 그리스어 bolbos (swelling or bulb) and schoinos (rush, reed), from the supposed difference from the genus Schoenus in having bulbous tubers
planiculmis: 줄기가 납작한
